Morphine Could Spread Cancer

Morphine is a drug that is routinely provided to cancer patients to relieve pain. Recent studies conducted in the laboratory suggest that morphine may stimulate the spread of the disease. The researchers said this opioid promotes the growth of new blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to tumors.

The scientists, who presented their findings during the joint conference of the American Association of Cancer Research and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, held in Boston, also reported the discovery of a new drug that could counteract this effect. Experts say, however, that more testing is needed before carrying out any change in treatment. (more…)
