			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Researchers from the Prevention and Research Center Yale-Griffin, Yale University (USA), ensure that a diet rich in walnuts helps improve endothelial function in patients with <a href="http://www.porter-research.com/?s=type+2+diabetes">type 2 diabetes</a> by encouraging, therefore, better <a href="http://www.porter-research.com/?s=cardiovascular+health">cardiovascular health</a>, according to results of a study published in the latest issue of the journal Diabetes Care.</p>
<p>Previous studies have shown the benefits of eating nuts for <a href="http://www.porter-research.com/?s=heart+health">heart health</a> but few studies had focused on patients with <a href="http://www.porter-research.com/category/health-and-diseases/diabetes">diabetes</a>. On this occasion, these experts analyzed the evolution of 24 adults who consumed an average of 56 grams daily for eight weeks, then continue with their usual diet over eight weeks.<span id="more-179"></span>Thus, detected in the first part of the study produced &#8220;significant improvement&#8221; with continued use of nuts, compared to when they changed into their diet. According to the study authors, this is an important finding because the endothelium is the first point of reference when we talk about cardiovascular disease.</p>
<p>Its function is the first to be altered in response to risk factors and this encouraged the emergence of elements that lead to vascular damage and early lesions of atherosclerosis. In addition, endothelial function indicates the ability of blood vessels to dilate and increase blood flow.</p>
<p>Furthermore, participants in the study gained weight during the investigation &#8211; the 56 grams of nuts equals about 350 calories &#8211; which shows that nuts are appropriate to the daily diet with people prone to it.</p>
<p>&#8220;We all know how healthy is to eat an apple a day, but in fact there are other foods that we should consider including in our daily diet to achieve specific benefits to our health. The nuts are at the top of the list,&#8221; said David Katz, chief author of the research.</p>
<p>This expert also stressed that the only nut with a significant amount of Omega 3 essential acids, plus proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants.</p>

<p>Another study found that eating chocolate may lower the risk of death after a stroke.     The authors explain that chocolate is rich in <a href="http://www.porter-research.com/?s=antioxidants">antioxidants</a> called flavonoids, which may have a protective effect against stroke but more research is needed.     <span id="more-184"></span>The analysis involved the review of three studies on chocolate and stroke. Sarah explains Sahib, responsible for the work, &#8220;more research is needed to determine whether chocolate actually lowers the risk of stroke, or if healthier people are simply more likely to eat chocolate than others.&#8221;</p>
<p>The first study found that 44,489 people who ate one serving of chocolate a week were 22 percent less likely to have a stroke than people who did not eat chocolate.     The second 1169 study found that people who ate 50 grams of chocolate once a week were 46 percent less likely to die after a stroke than those who ate no chocolate.</p>
<p>The researchers found only one study more relevant to its investigation of all available scientific literature. The work showed no link between eating chocolate and the risk of stroke or death.</p>

<p>Supplements containing soy isoflavone might not be effective in preserving bone mass in women after menopause.</p>
<p>In a study of more than 200 women between 46 and 65 years, researchers found that soy supplementation seemed to <strong><a href="http://www.porter-research.com/more-benefits-of-yoghurt.htm">prevent bone loss</a></strong> during 3 years.</p>
<p>In general, women who took the supplement showed the same degree of bone loss than those taking placebo, although there was some evidence that higher doses helped protect bone density in the hips.</p>
<p>The findings, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, adds to a conflicting body of research on soy and postmenopausal bone health.</p>
<p>Some studies suggest that soy-based foods, isolated soy protein or isoflavone supplements could be beneficial, while others do not find helpful.<span id="more-96"></span></p>
<p>Isoflavones are natural chemicals found in soybeans and some other edible plants that are structurally similar to estrogen, and may have effects similar to estrogen in the human body.</p>
<p>Since the decline of estrogen levels after menopause stimulate bone loss, in theory isoflavone supplements might protect women&#8217;s bone mass.</p>
<p>However, recent findings do not support that theory.</p>
<p>&#8220;I could not recommend women to take soy isoflavone tablets (&#8230;) as it has not been convincingly demonstrated to be effective for preventing bone loss,&#8221; he said in an email to Dr. D. Reuters Alekel Lee, professor of nutrition at Iowa State University in Ames who led the research.</p>
<p>However, he said, women should still try a diet with a variety of soy-based foods such as tofu, tempeh and cheese and yogurt versions derived from soybeans, as they were options &#8220;nutritionally sound&#8221;.</p>
<p>For their study, Alekel and his colleagues randomly assigned 255 postmenopausal women three groups: one who took 80 milligrams daily of a soy isoflavone supplement, one with a dose of 120 milligrams, and one who received inactive placebo pills.<br />
All women took calcium supplements.</p>
<p>For three years, women in the placebo and isoflavone groups showed similar mean decreases in total body bone mass and bone density in the spine and hip area.</p>
<p>However, women in the highest dose group showed isoflavone less bone loss in the femoral neck.</p>
<p>However, the researchers wrote, because the effects were limited to the femoral neck, &#8220;we can not conclude that soy isoflavones have a promising potential in the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis.</p>
<p>The idea that soy or soy isoflavones may protect bone mass comes in part from studies showing lower rates of hip fractures among South Asian women, where the traditional diet is high in soy.</p>
<p>However, such studies do not investigate cause and effect. Because only Alekel study was based on soy isoflavone supplements, the researcher said he could not relate to the potential effects of soy foods on bone health of women.</p>
